The LOSLAND project publishes its report on building the future in communities

The LOSLAND project supported ten municipalities across Germany from March 2020 to May 2023 in working with citizens to make their communities fit for future generations. LOSLAND developed tailor-made participation processes in cooperation with municipalities, inspired by citizens’ assemblies and other forms of citizen participation. The LOSLAND municipalities, the LOSLAND team and all project partners agreed that democracy needs an update, and wanted to start something new together.
The LOSLAND report – Building the Future in Communities – outlines the initiatives implemented in the municipalities. Through reports, interviews, photos, and contributions from project partners, this publication offers in-depth insights into the local LOSLAND processes. It also covers the implementation of recommendations from the citizens’ assemblies and explores new forms of collaboration.
The report offers useful tips for successful participation, asks stakeholders for their practical recommendations, compiles arguments in favour of citizens’ assemblies, answered frequently asked questions and much more!
LOSLAND identifies six levers to enable meaningful citizen participation that will resonate with the KNOCA community:
1. Practical experimentation and testing spaces for cooperation culture
2. Provide appropriate questions and ensure transparent implementation of the results of the participation
3. Easy access, including to process design
4. Communication for participation processes
5. General conditions for the successful implementation of participation processes
6. General conditions for the sustained implementation of participation processes
