"The Impact of Climate Citizens' Assemblies on Digital Media", is the first systematic comparison of the media impact of five national assemblies in Austria, France, Scotland, Spain and the UK. The research team, led by José Luis Fernández-Martínez, shows how coverage varies considerably, with the French Convention achieving significantly more media attention. The study explores the common patterns of coverage that emerge, with the highest peak of attention coinciding with the publication or presentation of the recommendations. Other peaks are more contextual, for example, the way that the online consultation with the wider public during the assembly increased coverage in Austria.

The Briefing provides important substantive and methodological insights for future evaluations of the impact of assemblies on digital media – as well as for those who are developing communications and media strategies for climate assemblies.

This study was originally commissioned by the European Climate Foundation to understand the impact of national climate assemblies on the media and broader public debate. It is longer than usual KNOCA Briefings, but we decided it was important to publish in this format so that it had wider circulation. The findings will of interest to anyone working on media strategies for climate assemblies.
